Garden knowledge is growing

Staff and students at Deeside college have been working hard over the past six months to complete the groundwork on their learning garden project.

A piece of land at the side of the college was selected during the summer to be developed into a garden, to let students take part in gardening, garden design and construction activities.

The aim of the learning garden project is to increase young people's awareness of their local environment and educate them on how to enhance and preserve it for future generations.

The development of the garden has been supported with the donation of materials and equipment from a number of local businesses including Jimsul, Castle Cement, Barlows Electrical Palm Signs; MC Supplies, Ringwood Fencing, Delyn Hire and Hewden Hire.

Funding for the rest of the materials required to transform the piece of land has been secured through an award for All Wales lottery grant.

Further funding has also been given by the Education and Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship fund administered through the Welsh Assembly.

Deeside College aims to complete the learning garden by August 2005.

In the meantime, students at the college are going to set up a web page to detail progress and share their experiences with others, in particular their pen pals in South Africa who have similar projects
