Progress
The staff and management of Deeside College set up a design competition for the Art & Design student to design a “Learning Garden” that would take into account the above aspirations. Landscape Architectures from Groundwork Wrexham & Flintshire visited the college and held a workshop with the students group. Subsequently the competition entries, which were of a very high standard, were judged and student Heather Williams was considered the winner. The event covered widely in the local press.
The winning design was development by Groundwork to provide a scale sketch drawing, which could be used to generate an estimate of costs for the project. The formalised sketch drawing has attempted to remain faithful to the “spirit” of the original design and includes most of the elements that could practically be achieved.
Following this, the college managed to secure funding from Awards for all Wales and from the National Assembly for Wales [ESDGC fund]. This has helped us to turn the piece of wasteland into a wonderful learning environment for the students of the college. As can be seen from the rest of the site the incredible hard work and determination that the staff and students involved have put into the project.
